Closet Vanity Ideas: How to Fit a Makeup Vanity in a Closet
A makeup vanity fits in a closet when you have a clear stretch of wall at least as wide as the desk, enough floor depth to pull out a stool, a nearby outlet and good light on your face. In practice that means about 32 inches of clear wall for a compact desk such as the Mira two-drawer vanity desk, or 36 to 40 inches for a desk with more storage. Walk-in closets usually have the room; a wide reach-in closet can work too once the doors come off or slide fully open.
Below you will find how to measure, which desk sizes fit which closets, how to light and power the spot safely, and five closet vanity ideas built around desks that are in stock now. If you would rather browse first, our small vanity collection groups the compact desks that suit closets best.
How much space does a closet vanity need?
Think of a closet vanity as three measurements: wall width, floor depth and the way in. Write all three down before you shop, because each one rules out different desks.
1. Clear wall width
Measure the wall where the desk will stand, from one side wall or shelf upright to the other. Take the measurement at desk height, about 32 inches off the floor, because shelves and baseboards can steal an inch or two. The desk's listed width must be smaller than this number, with a little extra so drawers and fingers are not scraping the walls.
If your closet has built-in shelving on one side, measure from the front edge of the shelves, not from the wall behind them. That front edge is what the desk will actually sit next to.
2. Floor depth, with the stool out
The desk's depth is only part of the story. You also need room to pull a stool out and sit. As a starting point, add the desk depth and the stool depth. For the Mira Trio set with its stool, that is 16.9 inches for the desk plus 15.75 inches for its stool, about 33 inches, and you will want more than that to sit and stand comfortably. If floor depth is tight, a stool that tucks fully under or inside the desk helps a lot.
In a walk-in closet, remember that the floor in front of the desk is often also your walkway. If you need to reach the hanging rods behind you while someone sits at the desk, plan for extra depth or choose a stool you can put away.
3. The way in
Measure the closet door opening and any hallway turn on the way. Not flat-pack: our desks arrive in large pre-built sections, and the drawers come built. Those sections have to fit through every door on the way to the closet, so check the narrowest door, not just the closet itself.

If you are still deciding on size, our guide to makeup vanity table dimensions explains height, depth and leg room in more detail.
Walk-in or reach-in: what changes?
A walk-in closet gives you a choice of walls. The end wall, opposite the door, is usually the best spot: it often has no hanging rod, it keeps the walkway clear, and you face into the room rather than into the clothes. If the end wall is taken, a side wall can work when the closet is wide enough for the desk depth plus the stool plus a path past you.
A reach-in closet is a different project. The desk goes where the clothes used to hang, so you will usually remove the rod, and often the doors, to make room for your knees and your elbows. Bifold or sliding doors that stay in place can block half the desk. Many people keep a short rod or a shelf above the mirror for the clothes they still need nearby.
In both cases, the narrow desks do most of the work. A depth under 17 inches, like the Mira desks, leaves far more floor free than a 21.7 inch desk.
Which desk fits which closet?
Here are the in-stock desks that suit a closet, smallest first. Every size comes from the product's own listing.
| Desk | Width | Depth | Drawers | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VanitiBar Mira | 31.5 in | 16.9 in | 2 | $424.98 |
| VanitiSet Mira Trio (desk, mirror, stool) | 31.5 in | 16.9 in | 2 | $652.50 |
| VanitiBar Nova Circle | 36 in | 21.7 in | 6 | $999.99 |
| VanitiBar Snug | 36.2 in | 21.7 in | 6, plus a storage stool | $1,099.99 |
| VanitiBar Icon 2.0 | 39.4 in | 21.7 in | 2 | $749.99 |
A quick way to read the table: if your closet wall is under about 36 inches, look at the Mira desks. Between 36 and 39 inches, the Nova Circle and Snug give you six drawers. With 40 inches or more, the Icon 2.0 adds a wider glass top.
5 closet vanity ideas
1. A slim desk on the end wall of a walk-in
The end wall of a walk-in closet is often the only stretch without hanging rods. The 31.5 inch Mira glass top desk is only 16.9 inches deep, so it leaves the walkway open. Two top drawers sit under an edge-to-edge clear tempered glass top, with RGB light on the tabletop and inside the drawers, plus built-in USB and Type-C ports. It does not include a mirror, so you can pick one that suits your wall.

2. A complete set for a reach-in closet
If you are turning a reach-in closet into a makeup nook, buying the pieces together keeps the sizes matched. The Mira Trio desk, mirror and stool set pairs the 31.5 inch Mira desk with a 15.8 by 19.7 inch LED mirror and a grey corduroy stool. The mirror offers three light colors with adjustable brightness from a touch control, has a Bluetooth speaker, and stands on a detachable base or hangs on the wall. Wall hanging is handy in a closet, because it frees the desktop. For other matched combinations, see every vanity set we carry.

3. A hidden stool for a shallow floor
When the floor in front of the desk is the tight spot, choose a stool that disappears. The Snug desk with its hidden storage stool is 36.2 inches wide, has six storage drawers, and comes with a soft stool that tucks fully inside the desk and has storage of its own. With the stool put away, the walkway stays clear. It comes in white, and you can see more options in our white vanity collection.

4. Display storage for a collection
If your closet doubles as a dressing room, glass-front drawers let you see palettes without opening anything. The Nova Circle desk with glass-front drawers is 36 inches wide, with two top drawers under a clear tempered glass top and a four-drawer side cabinet with glass fronts. RGB lighting runs across the tabletop and inside the drawers. It is in stock in white and black.

5. A wider glass top for a large walk-in
With 40 inches or more of clear wall, you can have a roomier work surface. The 39.4 inch Icon 2.0 desk has two large soft-close drawers, a tempered glass top and RGB LED lighting. The RGB version is in stock in pink and black.

How to light a vanity in a closet
Most closets have one ceiling light, which sits behind or above you and casts shadows on your face. For makeup, the light should come from in front of you, at face level. The simplest fix is a lighted mirror on the desk or on the wall above it. Browse vanity mirrors with lights to find one that fits your wall width, and see our guide to the ideal vanity light height for where to place it.
The RGB strips on these desks light up the tabletop and drawers, which helps you find products. Treat them as display light, and let the mirror light your face.
If you plan to add or change a ceiling fixture in a clothes closet, hire a licensed electrician. The National Electrical Code limits which fixtures can go in clothes closets and how far they must sit from the storage area: for example, 12 inches for surface-mounted LED fixtures and 6 inches for recessed ones, according to this summary of NEC section 410.16. Local codes can differ, so your electrician will confirm what applies in your home.
What about outlets?
A lighted mirror and the desk's charging ports both need power, and many closets have no outlet. Check before you buy. If the nearest outlet is in the bedroom, an extension cord is only a stopgap. The University of Georgia Extension advises against running cords under rugs or carpets, under furniture or through doorways, and against plugging one extension cord into another. For a permanent closet vanity, ask an electrician about adding an outlet near the desk.

Small touches that make it work
- Pick a stool you can tuck away. A backless stool slides under the desk; for more choices, see our vanity stool collection.
- Keep clothes away from the desk. Powder and liquid spills travel. If hanging clothes sit right beside the desk, leave a gap or add a shelf divider.
- Use the glass top. All five desks here have a clear glass top, so your everyday products stay in view and the closet still feels tidy.
- Short on closet space? A bedroom corner or a studio nook can work just as well. Our guide on how to set up a vanity in a studio apartment covers those layouts.
Closet vanity questions
How wide does a closet need to be for a vanity?
Wide enough for the desk plus a little breathing room. The narrowest desk in this guide, the VanitiBar Mira, is 31.5 inches wide, so a wall of about 32 inches or more is the starting point. The six-drawer desks need about 36 to 37 inches, and the Icon 2.0 needs about 40.
Can I put a vanity in a reach-in closet?
Yes, if the opening is wide enough and you are happy to give up that hanging space. Remove the rod, check that the doors open fully or take them off, and pick a shallow desk so the stool still fits in front.
Do I need a lighted mirror if my closet has a ceiling light?
For makeup, it helps a lot. A ceiling light shines from above, which shadows your eyes and jawline. A mirror with built-in lights puts the light in front of your face, where you need it.
