Hollywood Mirror Buying Guide: Size, Bulbs and Bluetooth

The best Hollywood mirror is about as wide as your desk or a little narrower, with dimmable bulbs and warm, natural and cool light. Pick the width first, then decide on extras such as Bluetooth speakers or a 10x magnifier. Ours run from the 22.4″ Curve at $209.99 to the 59″ Spectrum at $899.99.

What is a Hollywood mirror?
A Hollywood mirror is a vanity mirror framed in exposed bulbs, named after the bulb-ringed mirrors of film dressing rooms. Because the bulbs sit around the glass, light reaches your face from the front and the sides rather than from overhead, so there are fewer shadows under the eyes, nose and chin. Ours use LED bulbs, which stay cool to the touch and last far longer than the incandescent bulbs the original dressing-room mirrors used.
Why bulbs beat a ceiling light
Almost every complaint about makeup looking different outside comes down to one thing: the light it was applied under came from above. A ceiling fixture casts downward, which drops shadow into the eye sockets and under the jaw, and your brain compensates by telling you to add more product in exactly the places that already look dark. You then walk into daylight wearing more concealer and more contour than you meant to.
A bulb-framed mirror fixes this by surrounding your face with light at roughly the same height as your face. It is the same reasoning behind a photographer's ring light, and it is why makeup artists work with mirrors like these rather than overhead lighting. If you only change one thing about where you do your makeup, change the direction the light comes from.
1. Choose the width to fit your desk
Keep the mirror about as wide as your desk or a little narrower, so it does not overhang and you keep room for products on each side. Measure the desktop edge to edge first, and remember that a mirror on a stand also needs depth: allow a few inches behind it.
| Desk width | Mirror width that fits | Models |
|---|---|---|
| Under 31.5″ | 22″ or less | Curve, the only one this narrow |
| 31.5″ to 36″ | 22″ to 31.5″ | Curve, Atelier, RGB 18-bulb, Pro XL 14-bulb |
| 39″ to 47″ | 31.5″ to 39.5″ | RGB 20-bulb, Eclipse, Pro XL 15-bulb, Sterling |
| 59″ | 39″ to 59″ | Any of the above, or the 59″ Spectrum |

Height matters too, and a mirror that is correct in width can still sit wrong. You want the centre of the glass roughly level with your eyes when you are seated, which for most people means the mirror base sits on the desktop rather than mounted high on the wall. Our mirror height guide walks through the measurements, and if you are still choosing the desk itself, start with vanity desks.
2. How many bulbs?
More bulbs give more even light, but the count follows the design more than the width, so it is a poor thing to shop on. At 31.5″ wide the Atelier has 14 bulbs and the RGB has 18, and both light a face perfectly well. What matters more is spacing and diffusion: evenly spaced bulbs on all available sides beat a dense cluster along the top.
Anything from 12 bulbs up will light a face properly. Look at dimming and light color before you look at bulb count. One thing worth checking is whether the bulbs are replaceable, because a mirror with sealed LEDs is disposable once they fail, while a mirror with standard sockets can be re-bulbed for years. The Pro XL takes G95 bulbs and we sell them as a 16-pack, frosted at $69.99 or clear at $89.99.
Frosted or clear is worth a thought as well. Frosted bulbs scatter the light and give softer shadows, which most people prefer for everyday makeup. Clear bulbs are brighter and sharper and look more like a true dressing-room mirror. The Pro XL offers both, so you can pick.
3. Light color
Choose a mirror that switches between warm, natural and cool. Do your makeup on natural white, around 4000K to 5000K, which is closest to daylight and therefore closest to the light other people will see you in. Warm light, nearer 3000K, suits evening looks and is kinder for relaxing. Cool light, up around 6000K, shows the most detail and is useful for brows, lashes and skincare checks.
The Curve gives you 3000K, 4000K and 6000K, which is a good spread. Every mirror in the table dims, which matters more than people expect: a bulb-framed mirror at full brightness in a dark bedroom at six in the morning is unpleasant. There is more in our guide to warm vs cool vs natural light.
4. Tabletop, stand or wall
How the mirror is supported changes the room as much as its size does.
- Tabletop. The Curve sits directly on the desk. Easiest to move, no fixings, and the right answer in a rented room.
- Detachable base. The Spectrum and the Atelier stand on a base you can remove, so you can start on the desk and move to the wall later.
- Wall mounted. The Pro XL, RGB and Eclipse hang on the wall, which frees the whole desktop. Check the wall type before you order, because these are heavy and a plasterboard wall needs the fixings to land on studs.
5. Extras worth paying for
- Bluetooth speakers: Pro XL, Spectrum, Eclipse, Atelier and Sterling, plus the RGB if you pick that version.
- 10x magnifier: Curve and Eclipse, for brows, liner and lashes. The single most useful extra if your eyesight is changing.
- Charging: the Pro XL has 2 USB ports and 2 power sockets built in, which removes the extension lead most vanity desks end up with.
- Storage: the Atelier hides pull-out jewelry racks in its sides.
- Color: the RGB changes shade, and the Eclipse has an RGB glow around its edge. Never do your makeup under colored light, but it is lovely for everything else.
- Memory: the Sterling returns to your last brightness and color instead of defaulting to full cool white.
6. Power and setup
Every mirror here plugs into a standard outlet, so there is no electrician and no wiring. Setup is a matter of fitting the bulbs, attaching the base or the wall bracket, and plugging it in. Allow fifteen to twenty minutes and a second pair of hands for the larger ones, because a 59″ mirror is awkward rather than heavy.
Think about where the cable will run before you choose a spot. A wall-mounted mirror above a desk with no outlet behind it means a visible cable, and the neatest solution is usually to position the mirror so the cable drops behind the desk rather than across the wall. Everything in this guide ships within the US.
7. Budget
The lowest-priced Hollywood mirror we have in stock is the VanitiGlow Curve at $209.99, with 12 bulbs and a 10x magnifier. From there the steps are the RGB at $339.99, the Eclipse at $445.99, the Atelier at $729.99, the Pro XL from $809.99, the Spectrum at $899.99 and the Sterling at $999.99.
The jump worth understanding is the one from $209.99 to $339.99. Below it you get a well-made tabletop mirror with good light and a magnifier. Above it you start buying size and fittings: a wall mount, more bulbs spread over a wider frame, and on most models Bluetooth. If the mirror will live on a desk and you are the only person using it, the Curve is not a compromise and plenty of people stop there. If it is going on a wall, or two people share it, or you film at it, the extra width earns its money and the step up is worth making once rather than twice.
Two things worth knowing before you decide. Orders over $100 ship free within the US, so every mirror here ships free. Pay over time with Shop Pay Installments or Affirm at checkout if you qualify.
8. Care, and what happens when a bulb goes
Clean the glass with a soft cloth and a little glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than onto the mirror, so nothing runs into the bulb sockets or the frame edge. Wipe the bulbs when they are cool and dust them regularly, because a dusty bulb genuinely does dim.
LED bulbs fail far less often than incandescent ones, but they do eventually fail, usually one at a time. On a mirror with standard sockets you replace the one bulb and carry on. Replace it with the same type: mixing a frosted bulb into a clear set, or a different color temperature into a matched set, is immediately visible and surprisingly annoying.

Questions
What is the best Hollywood mirror?
The best one fits your desk and the way you use it. On a 47″ to 59″ desk, the 39″ Pro XL adds Bluetooth, 2 USB ports and 2 power sockets. For detail work, the Eclipse has a 10x extendable magnifier. On a small desk, the 22.4″ Curve is the compact pick.
How much does a Hollywood mirror cost?
Ours run from $209.99 for the Curve to $999.99 for the Sterling. The most popular range is $209.99 to $449.99, which covers the Curve, the RGB and the Eclipse.
Do Hollywood mirrors get hot?
LED bulbs stay much cooler than the old incandescent bulbs used in film dressing rooms, so they are comfortable to sit close to.
Can a Hollywood mirror hang on the wall?
The Pro XL, RGB and Eclipse are wall mountable. The Spectrum and Atelier stand on a detachable base, and the Curve is a tabletop mirror.
How many bulbs do I need?
Twelve is enough to light a face evenly. Beyond that, bulb count follows the design rather than performance, so compare dimming and light color instead.
Can you replace the bulbs?
On models with standard sockets, yes, one at a time. The Pro XL takes G95 bulbs, sold in a 16-pack, frosted at $69.99 or clear at $89.99. Always replace like for like so the set stays matched.
Are Hollywood mirrors good for makeup?
They are the best option for it. Light arrives from the front and sides at face height, so you are not working around the shadows a ceiling light drops into your eye sockets and under your jaw.
Tell us the measurement and whether the mirror sits on the desk or the wall, and we will tell you which two fit.
