How to Take a Mirror Selfie: Angles, Distance and Light

To take a good mirror selfie, turn off the flash, face a clean mirror with the light in front of you, and hold your phone at chest height, a little to one side of your body. Step back about 3 feet for a full-length shot and about 1 foot for a face shot, then tap the screen to focus on your reflection, not on the glass.

That is the short version. Below you will find where to stand, where to hold the phone, how to light yourself so your skin and outfit look true to life, and which mirrors make the whole thing easier.

The quick answer in six steps

  1. Clean the mirror and your camera lens. Smudges show up in photos far more than they do to your eye.
  2. Turn off the flash. A flash fired at a mirror bounces straight back into the lens as a white glare spot.
  3. Put the light in front of you. Light on the mirror wall, or a lighted mirror, falls evenly on your face and clothes.
  4. Pick your distance. About 1 foot for your face, 2 feet for half your body, 3 feet for a full outfit.
  5. Hold the phone off-center. Chest height and slightly to the side keeps it from hiding your face.
  6. Tap to focus on yourself. Then take several shots and pick the best.

Where to stand: the mirror doubles the distance

A flat mirror shows your reflection as far behind the glass as you stand in front of it. Physics textbooks put it simply: the distance from you to the mirror equals the distance from the mirror to the image (OpenStax University Physics). So if you stand 3 feet from the mirror, your camera sees you as if you were 6 feet away.

That is why a full-length photo works from closer than you might expect, and why stepping back too far makes you look small in the frame. Use these as a starting point and adjust for your phone and your height:

  • Face and hair: about 1 foot from the mirror, phone at eye level.
  • Half body: about 2 feet away, phone at chin height.
  • Full outfit: about 3 feet away, phone at chest height.

For full-length photos, the mirror itself has to be tall enough. The lighted mirrors in this guide are 63 to 70.8 inches tall, and you will find more sizes among our LED full length mirror styles.

How to hold your phone

Where the phone sits changes the whole picture. Three habits make the biggest difference:

Keep it off your face

Hold the phone at chest height and move it slightly to the side of your body, so your face stays clear. If you want your face in the shot, turn your body a little toward the mirror and keep the phone on the side you turn away from.

Keep it level

Tilting the phone up or down changes your proportions in the shot, so hold it upright and straight. On an iPhone you can turn on the grid in Settings, then Camera, to help line up your shot (Apple Support).

Use the back camera, or a timer

In a mirror selfie the back camera faces the mirror and the screen faces you, so you can frame the shot as you take it. If you prefer not to hold the phone at all, prop it on a shelf, aim it at the mirror and use the camera timer, one of the standard tools in your phone's camera (Apple Support).

Light: the part most mirror selfies get wrong

The single most useful rule is to face the light. Your camera sees what the mirror sees, and the mirror sees the front of you. Light has to land there.

Top view of three setups: light on the mirror wall gives an even bright face, a window behind you gives a dark face, and the flash gives a glare spot

  • Light on the mirror wall: a window beside the mirror, or lights built into the mirror, light your face and outfit evenly. This is the setup you want.
  • A window behind you: your back is lit and your front is in shadow. The bright window also appears in the reflection and makes the camera darken everything else.
  • The flash: it fires straight at the glass and comes back as a bright spot that hides part of your reflection. Turn it off.
  • A ceiling light right above you: it can cast shadows under your eyes and chin. Light at face height, in front of you, avoids that.

Choose the right light color

The lighted mirrors below let you switch between warm, natural and cool white, listed as 3000K, 4000K and 6000K. Natural white sits between the other two and is a good starting point for photos. Warm white looks soft and cozy; cool white looks crisp and bright. Take the same shot in each mode and keep the one that matches what you see. Our guide to warm, cool and natural white light explains the difference in more detail.

Placement matters as much as color. If the mirror sits next to a window or under a bright lamp, our guide to placing a vanity mirror to avoid glare walks through the best spots in a room.

Full-length mirror or vanity mirror?

For outfit photos, a full-length mirror is the only option that shows you head to toe. For face, makeup and hair shots, a vanity mirror at your desk is closer to your face and easier to light. Many people end up with both. If you are deciding between them, see how to choose between a full-length mirror and a vanity mirror, or browse every vanity mirror with lights we carry.

Mirrors and lights that make it easier

A lighted full-length mirror solves the two hardest parts of a mirror selfie at once: it is tall enough for a full outfit, and it puts light on you from the front. These are the ones in stock at Lumina Pro today.

Questions shoppers ask

Why is the writing backwards in my mirror selfie?

A mirror reverses your image front to back, which is why your right hand looks like a left hand in the reflection (OpenStax). Text on your shirt shows up reversed for the same reason. You can flip the photo horizontally in your phone's photo editor.

Should I use flash for a mirror selfie?

No. The flash reflects straight back into the camera as a glare spot. Use a lighted mirror, a window beside the mirror or a small clip-on light instead.

How do I take a mirror selfie without the phone covering my face?

Hold the phone at chest height and slightly to the side, then turn your body a little toward the mirror. Or prop the phone on a shelf and use the timer.

How does shipping work?

Shipping is free on orders over $100 within the US. Most orders ship in 1 to 3 business days and arrive 3 to 10 days after that. Items damaged in transit are replaced at no cost, and our lighted mirrors carry a 1-year limited warranty. Pay over time with Shop Pay Installments or Affirm at checkout if you qualify.

Ready for your next mirror selfie?

Clean the glass, switch off the flash, face the light and step back about 3 feet. If your mirror is too short or your room too dim, a lighted full-length mirror fixes both at once.
